Why do I need a project manager
While working in a technical engineering role at one of the Adelaide largest buildings, I noticed there was something missing. It did take me some time to work out why though.
I was engaged midway into the project build, I assumed that all the correct people, roles and responsibilities were in place and were well established.
The problems I noticed were;
- The same information was looked at numerous times, meetings included way too many people and action items were often deferred to another meeting.
- Decisions were avoided and information held back for fear of what other stakeholders might do.
The project was being directed by;
- Engineering staff who were looking for 100% perfect outcomes, regardless of what was best practice, and did not consider the costs, the time, the quality, nor the long term maintenance considerations.
- Procurement staff were putting the installation responsibility onto the equipment suppliers. Some of which had never installed their equipment before.
So what was missing…
…for this large significant complex project, the client had no project managers. There were none at all. Astounding! Not one person was 100% responsible for a department, a floor or a discipline or a section of the building. And of course no one was accountable.
