Should you keep your plant running during an upgrade or briefly close your facility?

The answer is of course…it depends!

Project shutdown for efficiency

There are so many variables that need to be considered to know which direction to choose. The more common thought is to keep the facility open, making some money while the changes are slowly happening around the operating facility. The two key words here are ‘some money’ and ‘slowly’ (which is actually three words.. oops!) and I question how efficient this type of upgrade really is?

We have been fortunate to work for some clients, where some tasks can’t be worked on during operations. I.e. in manufacturing, utility providers and transport. Where often critical operations have to be stopped or closed for the shortest possible period and must be back in operation when the deadline is reached.

I love shutdown projects, because it takes careful planning, hiring of the best people, and commitment from everyone involved and sometimes creative thinking on the fly.

I’m certain this approach is more efficient; where a little pressure makes great people work better and there are less mistakes because there is no time.

I’m certain more shutdowns should be planned even if they are not necessary, for the efficiency and financial benefits they bring.
