Are projects really impossible or do they just need more time and planning?

An impossible project?

Recently we completed a project task that a contractor had been avoiding for over 12 months. The task was installing 4 x 100mm conduits under a busy arterial road. The avoidance was due to concerns with underground rock, three large nearly 100 year old water main pipes, two old terracotta communication conduits and closing the only main arterial road in the area for a week.

The turning point in the project was the contractor finding the right project site manager willing to accept the challenge. After extensive information gathering and non-destructive testing of what is under the road, adding plenty of community engagement we had enough knowledge and confidence to attempt the task.

The road was closed every night for seven days; the nightshift team were hand-picked as the best in their respective fields. Everyone was very clear with the dangers of the operation and the emergency SA Water company crews on standby should an unfortunate event occur.

It was no surprise that with the careful planning and the right people on the job, it all went extremely well and ahead of planned schedule. The rigid PVC conduit carefully threaded between all the underground services. A job well done!

Seemingly impossible projects and difficult projects can be achieved successfully.
